Elephant’s Eye hike

Before this, we introduced you to Kloofs Corner – a short hike with amazing views.

It’s called the Elephant’s Eye hike and it comes second to Kloofs Corner, mainly because you have to pay a R36 fee to enter the Silvermine Nature Reserve and it is slightly longer. But once you are there, everything is easy peasy.

You will have to drive down a bit after entering the gate to reach the starting point of the hike.There is good signage across the trail and the path to the top is quite simple to follow. It took us about 48 mins to hike on a mostly flat trail with very few stops along the way. One of the stops was the “viewing point”, where you can get scenic pictures of the vineyards and forests of Tokai and Constantia. You can even see the cave from here, just a massive hole in the mountain.

The last few minutes will be slightly more strenuous, but at the cave, the air is cool and you can set up a small picnic, like we did! It is just beautiful.

Coming down is quick quick with an option of a shorter route (just by a few minutes) and a longer route. At one point, we just stopped and appreciated the silence around us among the greenery and the beauty of nature.

A note in terms of travel. The Silvermine Nature Reserve is located in Constantia, which is a, approximately, 30 min drive from Cape Town City Centre.
