Things to do in South Africa: Alpaca Loom

It’s a family-friendly farm that’s home to a variety of animals, but as the name suggests, the stars of the show are the alpacas. These fluffy creatures are known for producing some of the world’s softest wool, which is collected through annual shearing.

The farm is located just off the main road, and when you arrive you’ll be greeted by the farm shop. This is where you can buy tickets for the different tours on offer, as well as browse through a range of handmade alpaca wool products like scarves, socks, and throws. An alpaca watching as we stroll by

The Alpaca Loom offers several experiences, including guided walks with the alpacas, barn tours, and feeding tours. We opted for the feeding tour, which costs ZAR 70/$5 per person. While it was a lot of fun to feed the alpacas, we’d recommend considering one of the other tours if you want to learn more about these friendly animals and the farm’s process.

During the feeding tour, you can purchase a packet of seeds to hand-feed the alpacas. It can feel a bit nerve-wracking at first, but feeding them doesn’t hurt at all. If anything, it just tickles. The trick is to pour the seeds onto your palm, hold your hand out, and let the alpacas gently eat right from it.

After your tour, you can relax at the on-site café, which serves coffee, cold drinks, and light meals. For those who fall completely in love with the alpacas, there’s even the option to “adopt” one for a year.

The Alpaca Loom is a fun and unusual stop that’s perfect for couples, families, or anyone who wants a lighthearted day out surrounded by nature, great views, and even greater company, of the furry kind.
