Most Indian restaurants invite you to choose a few dishes and share them around the table. Thali Cape Town takes a different approach.
Located in Cape Town’s city centre, Thali combines Indian flavours with a fine dining approach, creating a curated dining experience that unfolds over the course of 90 minutes.
When dining at Thali, guests choose between a vegetarian, non-vegetarian or vegan thali. We opted for the vegetarian option and were impressed by the variety of flavours, spices and textures presented throughout the meal.
Rather than arriving all at once, the meal is served in three separate thalis over the evening.
Each time a new thali arrives, your waiter takes the time to explain the different components of the dish, what ingredients have been used, and how the flavours work together. This transforms the meal into more than just dinner. It becomes an experience that encourages you to slow down and appreciate each course.
Having visited many Indian restaurants over the years, we appreciated how Thali managed to showcase familiar spices and ingredients in ways that felt thoughtful and refined.
The restaurant itself adds to the experience. The atmosphere is intimate and welcoming, making it well suited to a special occasion, date night, or an evening when you want something a little different from the usual restaurant outing.
Service was another highlight. The staff guided us through each course and helped create a relaxed dining experience from start to finish.
The only part of the meal that did not stand out as much for us was the dessert. While it was enjoyable, it did not quite match the high standard set by the savoury courses that came before it.
Overall, Thali offers one of the more unique Indian dining experiences in Cape Town. The combination of multiple courses, attentive service and carefully balanced flavours makes it a restaurant worth considering if you are looking for something beyond a traditional Indian meal.
For those who enjoy exploring food through an experience rather than simply a menu, Thali delivers exactly that. It is a bit pricey, but we went for my graduation where I had completed Summa Cum Laude, so it was worth it!
