Kogelberg Nature Reserve Is the Perfect Affordable Escape from Cape Town

Finding peace and quiet without spending a fortune can be surprisingly difficult. That is why we were so pleased to discover the eco-pods and cabins at Kogelberg Nature Reserve, one of the most beautiful natural areas in the Western Cape. If you’d like to see what you can expect, watch this.

Located just beyond Betty’s Bay and roughly an hour and a half from Cape Town, Kogelberg offers the kind of escape that feels much further away than it actually is. It is close enough for a one-night stay, yet remote enough to make you feel completely disconnected from city life.

The reserve offers a range of accommodation options, including eco-pods designed for two people and larger cabins that can accommodate groups of up to six. Every time we have gone, we book the honeymoon cabin. It’s absolutely perfect for the two of us and the views are stunning (keep reading). We’ve had a look at the other eco pods too, and we might look at booking those for our next trip because they look wonderful too.

Prices vary depending on the season and day of the week, but during our search, pod accommodation started from around R1,330 per night, while the larger cabin started from approximately R2,900 per night. Also, Cape Nature often has these Black Friday or Winter specials, where they offer between 20 to 40% off of their accommodations. It’s our favourite deal to use!

The views are what immediately stand out. Sitting on the balcony with a cup of tea or coffee while looking out over the surrounding mountains and fynbos was easily one of our favourite parts of the stay. There is very little noise, very few distractions, and plenty of opportunity to simply sit and appreciate the landscape.

More About the Kogelberg Nature Reserve

Inside, the accommodation is spacious and comfortable. The pods include a large bed, seating area, self-catering kitchen, outdoor braai, and an en-suite bathroom, making them well suited to couples looking for a short getaway. The bathroom has a spa bath too, which is my favourite thing to look for when booking a relaxing accommodation!

One thing worth noting is that the reserve uses environmentally friendly composting toilets. While this aligns with the eco-conscious nature of the accommodation, it can attract mosquitoes at times. It certainly would not stop us from visiting again, but it is useful information to know before arriving.

Beyond the accommodation itself, there is plenty to do within the reserve. Several hiking trails begin from the area, ranging from easy walks to more challenging routes. You can also walk to the Palmiet River (which is stunning), and depending on when you go, you may be able to swim there too. Mountain biking is also available for those looking to explore further. A warning though, this nature reserve is well known for snakes! We saw one too, so just keep an eye out especially along the hiking routes. You can also get board games at the reception or walk to the pool that’s accessible to all guests.

Visitors who are not staying overnight can still access many of the reserve’s activities by paying the entrance fee.

What we loved most about Kogelberg was how accessible it felt. You do not need to commit to a long holiday or extensive planning. It works just as well as a quick overnight break when you need a change of scenery and some time in nature.
