This place needs little introduction; Fish on the Rocks is that iconic fish and chips Cape Town plug🔌If you’d like to watch instead of read, click here.

Situated right at the edge of Hout Bay harbour, this spot has been serving up fried goodness for decades. And judging by the crowds (and the seagulls), it’s still one of the most-loved local gems around.

What Makes This Fish and Chips So Special?

Honestly? It’s the chaotic charm. It’s loud, messy, and always full. But somehow, you wouldn’t want it any other way.

The location is unbeatable: ocean views in one direction, colourful harbour vibes in the other, and Chapman’s Peak towering just behind you. The scent of salt, fish, and chips floating through the air? Chef’s kiss.

Seagull tip: Don’t leave your food unattended. These birds are regulars, and they don’t play fair 😅

What to Order

The hake and chips is a no-brainer. Crispy, golden batter. Hot, thick-cut chips. Affordable and filling. But don’t stop there. They also serve:

  • Grilled or fried prawns
  • Calamari
  • Snoek
  • Seafood platters for the hungry among us

Our personal fave? Hake + prawns combo — consistently delicious, no matter how many times we’ve gone back.

The Little Things We Love

✅ The ketchup in mini cups (yes, this deserves its own shoutout)

✅ The hustle of placing your order quick quick

✅ The always full spaces

✅ Big portions that you’ll struggle to finish

✅ Eating by the sea

Fish and Chips Cape Town

Make a Day of It

If you’re visiting on a Saturday, there’s a local market right across the road selling:

  • Handcrafted clothing
  • Locally-made jewellery & artefacts
  • Ice cream, snacks, and drinks

It’s a lovely spot to browse while waiting for your food or walking off your full stomach after. We also recommend:

  • Taking pictures of the panoramic harbour & mountain views
  • Admiring the local art sold along the road
  • Visiting the old canons across the lot (perfect for kids and history fans)

Fish on the Rocks is one of those places that captures the spirit of Cape Town. It’s unpretentious, buzzing, and rooted in good food, big portions, and even bigger views. Whether you’re a tourist, a local showing friends around, or just in the mood for really good fish and chips, this spot delivers every time.
