Here’s everything you need to know before hiking Bailey’s Kloof

Time, Location and Fitness Level

• Duration: 2–3 hours (including breaks)
• Distance: Loop route via St James’ Peak
• Fitness level: Average to moderate
• Location: Bailey’s Kloof, Muizenberg (opposite the Shark Spotters booth on Boyes Drive)
• Drive time from Cape Town CBD: Approximately 30 minutes

Parking is available at the trailhead along Boyes Drive.

We recommend starting before 12pm. The afternoon winds in this area can be strong, especially along the exposed sections near the peak, which can make the climb more demanding.

The first stretch is steep and can feel intense, particularly on windy days, but it’s manageable if you pace yourself.

The Bailey’s Kloof Trail Route

The hike begins just off the road at a green information board marking the start of the trail.

The first 30–40 minutes are the toughest. Expect a steady incline with strong winds at times. This is a good opportunity to stop occasionally and take in the sweeping views of Muizenberg Beach and the False Bay coastline below.

Once you clear the steepest section, the trail levels out slightly. Keep right towards St James’ Peak. Along the way, make sure to stop at Stonehenge, also known as God’s Window. This viewpoint offers some of the best panoramic views on the route and is worth lingering at for a few minutes.

From there, the trail gradually ascends toward the peak. The route is fairly clear, but using the AllTrails map can be helpful if you’re unfamiliar with the area. You’ll know you’ve reached the top when you see the trig beacon marking St James’ Peak.

The Descent via Muizenberg Caves and Nellie’s Pool

Instead of turning back the way you came, continue forward from the peak to complete the loop. The descent takes you past Muizenberg Caves and Nellie’s Pool before joining the contour path. This section is more comfortable underfoot and offers additional coastal views before reconnecting with the original Bailey’s Kloof path for the final steep section back down to Boyes Drive. The loop makes the hike feel more dynamic and prevents the monotony of retracing your steps.

What to Pack and Know Before You Go

• At least 1–2 litres of water
• Proper hiking shoes with good grip
• A windbreaker (even on warm days)
• Sun protection

Our Experience Hiking Bailey’s Kloof

We completed the full loop via St James’ Peak, descending past Muizenberg Caves and Nellie’s Pool. The wind picked up significantly near the top, which reinforced our recommendation to start earlier in the day. All route details and timing are based on our personal hike.
