The Hidden Antipolis Shipwreck at Oudekraal

About the Antipolis Shipwreck: The shores of South Africa are known for plenty of shipwrecks, with many meeting an unfortunate fate. In July 1977, the massive Greek oil tanker Antipolis met its fate. Weighing 25,000 tons, the vessel was being transported by tugboat from Greece toward the Far East when disaster struck.

You can watch here! As the convoy neared Table Bay, severe gale-force winds severed the tow line connecting the tanker to its guide vessel. Left without control, the Antipolis drifted helplessly until powerful winds drove it ashore at Oudekraal, where it collided with a reef and sank partially beneath the surface. The wreckage eventually came to rest against the rocky shores of this dramatic stretch of the South African coast.

3 years ago, the City reported that the ship wreckage had been washed ashore near Oudrekaal Nature Reserve. Finding the wreck is the tricky part, though.

Antipolis Shipwreck

To access it, you will need to drive along Victoria Road adjacent to the 12 Apostles. Assuming that you are coming from Camps Bay, you will need to park in the designated areas after you pass the hotel on your right-hand side. You will see a green sign, but it doesn’t indicate the shipwreck as such.

You will then need to walk on the side footpath and reach a very steep area where you will need to climb down. It looks scarier than it is, but we suggest wearing closed shoes with a good grip. Once you are down, the shipwreck is a sight to behold. The main part is still intact, while other pieces are distributed across the shore.

This is a popular diving spot and is visited by many, so you will see people admiring the ship remains with you. Enjoy!
