Helly Hutchinson hike/Avenue trail Camps Bay: the hidden hike Cape Town doesn’t talk about enough

We love finding new hiking routes around the city; Cape Town is blessed with too many but we aren’t complaining at all. A while ago, we discovered the Helly Hutchinson hike/Avenue trail in Camps Bay.

Helly Hutchinson Hike

It’s an easy 1.5 hour hike for those beginning their fitness journeys or want to restart after the Dezemba break (we see you) 🤪 The hike starts in a residential area so the tricky part is finding where you start. Buttt we’ve got you covered!

Drive along Camps Bay Drive before taking a turn on the Prima Avenue and another turn at the Helly Hutchinson Ave. You will then taken another turn shortly at the Woodhead Close and at the end of the road you will find parking opposite a complex.

By the parking area is a playground, and you start on the left of that playground. The path isn’t too clear at the beginning but as you proceed you will find a clear hiking route.

Once you reach the intersection, you will find a path going left or right. You can go both ways because the route is circular, we recommend going right though as the climb is easier. The path is easy to follow and you keep going straight until you reach a 3-way intersection (as shown in the video).

Here you will take a left until you join the Pipe Track route. After about 15-20 mins along the Pipe Track route, you will turn left.
NOTE: the entry here isn’t very clear but please see our video above on where to turn.The last part of the route is mostly downhill until you join back on the path you started, and the last part is tarmac.

You will know you are on the right path as the complex will come back to view. Enjoy!
