Cocoa Cha Chi in Observatory is one of our favourite breakfast spots in Cape Town to get it right. If you’re anything like us, then you know weekend breakfasts are sacred. Whether it’s a classic egg-and-toast combo or a sweet stack of pancakes, there’s something grounding about starting the day with a good meal. But if we’re being honest, nothing beats French toast.

Many Capetonians will remember Cocoa Wah Wah, their sister spot that sadly closed during the pandemic. Cocoa Cha Chi, though, has held strong and quietly become a go-to breakfast spot in Observatory, especially for anyone craving something indulgent. They also often run lunch or dinner specials, but breakfast is where they really shine.

Why we keep going back to these breakfast spots in Cape Town

The French toast menu at Cocoa Cha Chi is genuinely hard to beat. You can keep it simple with a classic maple syrup drizzle, or lean fully into dessert territory with gourmet toppings like strawberries, cream, jam, almonds, or even chocolate. Whether you’re in the mood for something slightly savoury or unapologetically sweet, there’s an option that works.

We’ve ordered the French toast more times than we can count (and no, we’re not sorry 😅), and it delivers every single time.

Our top tip

Ask for the double portion. That gets you two slices of bread instead of one, and it makes a big difference. It’s far more filling, especially if you’re planning to skip lunch, walk around Observatory, or head out for a hike later in the day.

While we always end up ordering the French toast, the rest of the menu looks solid too. Maybe next time we’ll branch out. Maybe.

This is a spot we’ve personally visited multiple times, and the French toast has been consistently good on every visit. Check out our other recommendations for breakfast in Cape Town!

Our favourite: Gourmet French toast with strawberries and cream

Pro tip: Order the double portion

If you’ve been before or there’s a dish you think we should try next time, send it our way and we’ll report back.
