This one’s for the train lovers! If you’ve ever dreamed of riding a vintage steam locomotive through misty mountains and rolling hills, the Ceres Rail Company experience to Elgin Railway Market is the day trip you didn’t know you needed. Getting Started

The trip starts early. Train departure is at 07:45, but we recommend you arrive by 07:20 to get your seating allocation from the train master. This time may vary depending on the season and sunrise times. The boarding location is at the Harbour Bridge Hotel in Foreshore, Cape Town.

Parking tip: There’s free covered parking at the Harbour Bridge (even if you get a ticket, the boom gate is open on exit). Unshaded parking is also nearby for those who prefer it. Both options are safe and convenient.

The Ride Up to Elgin

Once you’re onboard, it’s time to sit back and relax. The train meanders for 3 hours and 15 minutes through dramatic mountain passes, farmlands, and open valleys. Honestly, some of the most breathtaking views we’ve seen await you.

You can even sign up for WhatsApp updates during the journey for route info, announcements, and little competitions. The staff know their route well. They will point out key photo opportunities, including where to see the front of the train as it curves along the mountains!

Our tip: Pack a mini picnic basket, books, card games, and music to enjoy along the way. It’s a slow, relaxed ride, perfect for switching off and reconnecting with loved ones.

Winter warning: The windows are often open for better views (and photos!), which means cold wind on your face. Make sure to pack a blanket and a warm jacket to stay cozy.

Elgin Railway Market

You’ll reach Elgin Market around 11:45. You get to spend about 2.5 hours there, which is ample time to explore. The market is buzzing with life. They have food stalls catering to all diets, local craft and antique stores, handmade goods, clothing, and wooden art. Enjoy the stunning mountain views while you shop or dine. The vibe is relaxed and family-friendly. You’ll often find both tourists and locals from Elgin enjoying the space.

The Ride Back

After relishing lunch, browsing, and people-watching, it’s time for the train to depart back toward Cape Town. We’ll be honest – the ride back feels longer, especially after enjoying a hearty meal 😅. Yet, the views remain stunning, providing a perfect chance to nap or unwind for the final leg of the journey.

We chose the Lounge Car (R860 pp), which features plush sofa-style seating, shared tables, and a relaxed, social atmosphere. This option is highly recommended if you’re traveling as a couple or in a group.
