About the Lion’s Head Full Moon Hike

The Lion’s Head hike starts along Signal Hill Road and is easy to spot. It’s one of the most popular hiking routes in Cape Town, especially on full moon evenings, which means you’ll be sharing the trail with plenty of other hikers. This busy atmosphere helps the trail feel safer, even after dark.

The climb up Lion’s Head takes around 75 minutes, with the descent taking about 45 minutes. We recommend allowing at least 30 minutes at the top to soak in the views of Cape Town’s skyline, Table Mountain, and the Atlantic coastline.

Because this is a popular route with ladders, scrambling sections, and narrow paths, it’s best to plan extra time. There are often moments where you’ll pause to let others pass, especially closer to sunset and moonrise. Starting your hike well before sunset means you’ll catch the sun dipping behind the ocean while the full moon begins to rise behind you.

What to Expect on a Lion’s Head Night Hike

We began our descent just before sunset, and along the way, we watched the full moon rise over the city. Seeing the moon so close while the city lights slowly switch on below is something photos don’t fully capture.

The view from the summit is even better, allowing you to experience the full transition from sunset to moonrise in one place. This is what makes the Lion’s Head full moon hike so special compared to a regular daytime hike.

Once the sun has set, it gets dark quickly, so a headlamp or strong torch is essential for the way down. We were surrounded by fellow hikers, which made navigating the trail feel safer and easier, with people sharing light and helping each other along the route.

Is the Lion’s Head Full Moon Hike Safe?

One of the most common questions is whether Lion’s Head is safe at night. Because the full moon hike is extremely popular, especially around peak full moon dates, there are usually many hikers on the trail at the same time. This creates a lively, communal atmosphere that adds to the experience.

That said, it’s important to come prepared. Wear proper hiking shoes, bring a torch or headlamp, and avoid hiking alone if you’re unfamiliar with the route. The ladders and scrambling sections can feel more challenging at night, so taking your time is key. You can get most of this equipment at a hiking store like Sportsmans Warehouse, Outdoor Warehouse, or Takealot.
