Sevilla Rock Art Trail: Best Historical Day Trips from Cape Town

Looking for a day out that mixes nature, history, and a bit of adventure? The Sevilla Rock Art Trail near Clanwilliam is a unique experience that takes you straight into South Africa’s ancient past.

Located about a three-hour drive from Cape Town, this trail works well as a long day trip if you start early. The rock paintings found along the route are estimated to be between 8 000 and 800 years old, making this one of the most fascinating outdoor heritage experiences in the Western Cape. The trail starts at the Khoisan Kitchen, which also doubles as a small restaurant and craft shop. This is where you’ll pay the entrance fee of R40 per person and collect a pamphlet. Make sure you take one, as it provides important context and explanations for the approximately 2 500 rock paintings you’ll encounter along the way.

The walk itself is fairly relaxed, although the heat can make it feel more challenging, especially in summer. Expect some light scrambling, stepping over rocks, and a bit of climbing, but nothing too technical. Along the route, you’ll visit nine different rock art sites, each offering insight into the lives, beliefs, and daily activities of the region’s early inhabitants.

There are two trail options to choose from. The shorter route takes about 1.5 hours round trip, while the longer loop takes roughly 2.5 to 3 hours. Painted footsteps along the trail help guide you, making the route easy to follow even if you’re unfamiliar with the area.
