This is our go-to spot when we need to slow down and find a little calm. If you’d like to watch things to do in Cape Town instead of read, click here.

You don’t need to be an artist to enjoy the art of painting, and at Clay Cafe, you get to create something beautiful and unwind in the process. It’s honestly one of our favourite things to do in Cape Town when we’re craving quiet, creativity, and something different.

What Is Clay Café?

Think of it as a little escape where painting meets good food and greenery. You choose from a wide selection of ceramic pieces, from functional items like bowls and mugs, to cute and quirky shapes like cars, animals, or decor pieces. There’s something for every age, vibe, and mood.

And don’t worry if you’re not “creative”. We aren’t either. But the process itself is so therapeutic, you’ll forget you even cared about staying inside the lines.

Pro tip: Pinterest is your best friend if you need inspo. Trust us! We always have it open on the side (but don’t tell anyone 😉).

The Vibe

We love visiting on sunny days and sitting outside, surrounded by grass, trees and mountain views. The outdoor space adds a beautiful, grounding element to the whole experience, almost like a mini retreat without leaving the city.

If the weather’s gloomy, the indoor space is just as cosy with soft lighting, a calm buzz, and shelves full of ceramics to choose from.

Food

Another win? Clay Café serves food too, so you can sip a cappuccino or grab a bite while you paint. It’s a great combo: art + lunch = soft life. Recently, they introduced a halaal menu at their Hout Bay branch (yay!). We haven’t tried it yet, so if you have, please drop a comment, we’d love to hear your thoughts.

Looking for things to do in Cape Town? Here’s their booking info

Clay Café gets fully booked super fast, especially on weekends, holidays and school breaks. Walk-ins are very limited.

Booking tip: Make a reservation on their website in advance, and plan to spend at least 2–3 hours painting, snacking, and enjoying the moment.

Where to Go

  • Hout Bay (Main Branch) – Our go-to
  • Other locations: Paarl and CBD

If you’re looking for something restorative, romantic, or just relaxing, Clay Cafe is a must-visit. Whether you’re going with your partner, a friend, or even solo, you’ll leave feeling calmer, more grounded, and a little more proud of something you created.
