When people think of Cape Town attractions, a few names usually come up immediately. Table Mountain. Robben Island. The V&A Waterfront. And, of course, Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden. You can watch here.
But here’s the thing: Kirstenbosch is not just a tourist attraction. It’s one of those places that locals return to again and again, and somehow, every visit feels a little different.
Nestled against the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch is one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the world. Spanning hundreds of hectares and home to more than 7,000 plant species, it is a place where you could spend an entire day wandering and still discover something new. We’ve visited countless times over the years and still haven’t explored every corner.
Walk the Boomslang at the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden
If there is one thing every first-time visitor should do, it’s walk the Boomslang. This elevated canopy walkway curves through the treetops and offers stunning views of the gardens, surrounding mountains and the city beyond.
The structure itself is impressive, but the perspective it gives you of the gardens is what makes it special. It’s easily one of the most photographed spots in Kirstenbosch, and for good reason, and I always go back here every time we return!

Discover South Africa’s Incredible Plant Diversity
One of the things we love most about Kirstenbosch is how much there is to learn while exploring.
Throughout the gardens, you’ll find informational placards explaining different plant species, their uses and their significance. Even after multiple visits, we still find ourselves stopping to read about a plant we’ve walked past before.
The gardens showcase an incredible range of indigenous flora, making it one of the best places to appreciate South Africa’s botanical diversity.
Don’t Skip the Greenhouses
While many visitors focus on the outdoor gardens, the conservatories deserve attention too.
The greenhouses are home to plants from some of South Africa’s most arid regions and create a completely different experience from the lush gardens outside.
They’re beautifully maintained and offer an interesting contrast to the landscapes found elsewhere in the garden.
Join a Free Guided Tour
A feature that many visitors don’t know about is the free guided tours.
Weekday visitors can join a 90-minute guided walk, usually offered between 10:00 and 14:00. It’s a fantastic way to learn more about the gardens, the plants and the history of the area from knowledgeable guides.
Even if you’ve visited before, you’ll probably leave having learned something new.
Pack a Picnic or Stay for a Meal
Kirstenbosch is one of our favourite places in Cape Town for a picnic.
There are countless grassy spots where you can spread out a blanket, enjoy the scenery and spend a few leisurely hours outdoors.
If you’d rather leave the food preparation to someone else, Moyo Kirstenbosch is located within the gardens and offers a convenient dining option during your visit.
A Garden That Changes Throughout the Year
Another reason we keep returning is that Kirstenbosch never feels exactly the same.
Different plants bloom at different times of the year, seasonal events regularly take place, and the changing weather creates new moods and colours throughout the gardens.
There is always something happening.
Whether it’s an outdoor concert, a seasonal display or simply a different section of the garden you’ve never explored before, Kirstenbosch rewards repeat visits.
Why We Keep Going Back
Some places are worth visiting once.
Kirstenbosch is the kind of place you’ll want to return to.
Maybe it’s the mountain backdrop. Maybe it’s the endless variety of plants. Or maybe it’s simply the feeling of slowing down for a few hours and escaping the pace of everyday life.
Whatever the reason, we have visited countless times and still feel like there is more to discover.
And while there is a virtual tour available online, we can confidently say that no computer screen does justice to experiencing Kirstenbosch in person.
