Cape Town has no shortage of markets, but there are a few that keep drawing us back time and time again. Bay Harbour Market in Hout Bay is one of them. Watch here!
Whether you are looking for a unique gift, locally made products, great food or simply a fun way to spend a few hours, this market manages to tick all the boxes.
Open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, Bay Harbour Market has become a favourite among both Capetonians and visitors looking to experience some of the creativity that makes Cape Town special.
Bay Harbour Market
One of the things we enjoy most about visiting is wandering through the stalls and discovering things we never knew we needed.
You’ll find everything from clothing and jewellery to paintings, home décor and handcrafted gifts. During our last visit, we came across a clever fruit basket that could also transform into a chopping board. It’s exactly the sort of unexpected find that makes browsing markets so much fun.
Art lovers will feel right at home here too. Inside the market, local artists display their work alongside the various vendors, creating a vibrant and creative atmosphere. If you’re still in the mood for more art afterwards, there are several galleries within walking distance where you can continue exploring paintings and other artworks.
Of course, no market visit is complete without food. One of the reasons Bay Harbour Market appeals to such a wide audience is the variety of food available. Whether you’re in the mood for something savoury, a sweet treat, fresh juice or international cuisine, there is usually something to satisfy your cravings.
The market is also accommodating of different dietary requirements, making it easier for groups with varying tastes to find something they enjoy.
Adding to the atmosphere is the live entertainment. There is often a band performing in the central area, creating the kind of relaxed energy that encourages you to linger a little longer than planned.
If you’re a seafood lover, there is another stop worth adding to your itinerary. Located directly opposite the market is Fish on the Rocks, one of Cape Town’s most popular seafood spots. Known for its fish, prawns and other seafood dishes, it attracts both locals and tourists throughout the year. It is halaal-friendly and can get exceptionally busy, especially during peak periods, so it’s worth planning your timing carefully.
As for parking, we have rarely struggled to find a spot. There is usually parking available along the road leading to the market and near the harbour area. During festive seasons and public holidays, however, it can become significantly busier.
If you prefer not to drive, the popular City Sightseeing Cape Town route also includes Bay Harbour Market as one of its stops, making it easy to visit as part of a larger day of exploring Cape Town.
Bay Harbour Market is one of those places where you can arrive without a plan and still have a fantastic time. You might leave with a handcrafted gift, discover a new favourite food stall, listen to live music or simply spend a few hours soaking up the atmosphere.
And for us, that’s exactly what makes it worth returning to!
