Lokkum Turkish Food in Johannesburg: Worth Visiting?

Lokkum Turkish

Most people know lokkum as Turkish delight. Soft, slightly chewy, dusted with icing sugar and available in countless flavours. In Johannesburg, however, Lokkum means something entirely different. During a recent trip to Joburg, we visited Lokkum Turkish restaurant for lunch, and it turned out to be one of the most memorable meals we’ve had in South Africa. In fact, it is the best Middle Eastern food we have eaten in the country. The owner, Miqdad, invited us to try a few new menu items that he was planning to introduce. What followed was a meal that reminded us why Turkish and Middle Eastern cuisine is loved around the world.

Why Lokkum Turkish Stands Out Among Turkish Restaurants in Johannesburg

We started with the Mini Lahmacuns and Balloon Bread served with garlic butter, ezme and Turkish cheese. The balloon bread arrived fresh and warm, making it difficult to stop reaching for another piece. For our mains, we were served the Beef Chökertme Kebab and the Cheesy Steak Roll.

Every dish that arrived at the table looked carefully prepared. The presentation was impressive, but more importantly, the flavours delivered.

The Beef Chökertme Kebab was a standout. Thinly cut fries formed the base for tender, flavourful meat that had clearly been marinated and cooked with care. The combination of textures and flavours worked perfectly together.

The Cheesy Steak Roll was equally enjoyable, packed with flavour and generously filled. To finish, we shared the honey cake, which provided a sweet ending without feeling overly rich.

What stood out most throughout the meal was the consistency. Every dish felt considered. The flavours were balanced, the ingredients tasted fresh, and there was clear attention to detail in both the preparation and presentation.

South Africa has no shortage of excellent restaurants, but it is rare to visit a place where every dish leaves an impression. Lokkum managed to do exactly that.

If you’re looking for authentic Turkish food in Johannesburg or simply searching for a restaurant that offers something different from the usual dining experience, Lokkum deserves a place on your list.

And for once, Cape Town has to accept defeat. This round belongs to Johannesburg 😛
