Where to stay in Oudtshoorn: A Cozy Bed and Breakfast in the Heart of Town

One of our favorite parts of traveling is staying in new accommodation spots. Where you stay really sets the tone for the trip. Also, a good nights rest means that you are much more likely to have a nice trip.

This past December, we set off on a road trip across South Africa, driving through seven provinces, visiting seven towns, and staying in seven different places along the way. Oudtshoorn was one of our first stops, and it’s where we discovered Gumtree Guest House.

Tucked away in the heart of Oudtshoorn, this charming bed and breakfast is a bit of a hidden gem (you can watch here). It was quite affordable and even better, within walking distance to the main road!

A Warm Welcome from the Hosts

Gumtree Guest House is run by Phil and Linda, a kind, welcoming, and well-traveled couple who make the experience feel personal from the moment you arrive. Beyond simply checking you in, they take the time to share helpful recommendations about what to see and do in the area (especially with the Swartberg Pass). In fact, some of the directions and tips they gave us turned out to be the most accurate we’ve received on any trip. That local insight made exploring Oudtshoorn even easier.

The Guest House Atmosphere

The property itself has a peaceful, relaxed feel. One of the highlights is the pool area, which is perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring the Klein Karoo.

You can sit outside with a drink, read a book, or simply enjoy the greenery surrounding the property. It’s the kind of space that encourages you to slow down and soak up the atmosphere.

Because the guest house is surrounded by nature, you might encounter the occasional bug in the evenings (as we did). Luckily, Phil keeps bug spray and repellents on hand if you happen to forget yours.

The breakfast wasn’t the star of the show as such, but everything else makes it a must recommend.

Rooms and Pricing

If you’re planning a stay, we recommend booking one of the rooms that face the pool. The view adds an extra layer of calm to the experience. You’ll also hear less cars and hustle bustle.

Rooms start at around R1000 per night, making it a solid option for travellers looking for comfort, convenience, and friendly hospitality in Oudtshoorn. You can book directly through the guest house website or via Booking.com.

In a Nutshell: Our Experience at Gumtree Guest House

We stayed here during our multi-province South African road trip and found the location and hospitality to be standout features. The hosts’ recommendations made exploring Oudtshoorn much easier, and the pool-facing rooms added to the relaxing atmosphere of the stay. Prices and availability may vary depending on the season, so we recommend checking the latest rates before booking.

If you’re looking for a comfortable and welcoming place to stay in Oudtshoorn, Gumtree Guest House is definitely worth considering. Between the peaceful setting, the helpful hosts, and the central location, it’s an easy choice for travellers exploring the Klein Karoo or passing through on a Garden Route road trip.
